Jheri Curls; Dead or In Disguise?

“History repeats itself.” I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase before. And you know what? It’s true. You might not always catch it but I can reassure you, history is constantly showing up like an unwanted ex, begging for you to take him or her back. But here’s a small piece of wisdom I’d like to bestow on you: an ex is an ex for a reason. Not to say that you shouldn’t learn from the past because that’s exactly what you’re about to do.

     That’s right! Those ugly bastards are back with a vengeance. Oh, but they’re sly, slippery little suckers, hiding behind their more fashionable facade. Where, you wonder? Everywhere.

What once started out as a fad of the late 70’s, and lasted well into the 80’s, took some ‘me time’ for a decade or two and has decided to grace the world with it’s presence once again! Don’t think them dumb, though – they know their time to shine has died along with acid-washed jeans and the DeLorean. But they wouldn’t let the man keep them down; the demanded to be sprung free from the excuse “that was in at the time” and wanted part of “this is the future”. And they’ve succeeded.

Feels like an alien race has landed on Earth with the intention of invading and overthrowing humans, no? I’m sorry to say this but that’s exactly what is happen, just in terms of hair.

About 8 or so years ago, for women’s hair, straight was the big thing; as pin-straight as possible. No life – no problem! Looking around now that’s not the case. Everywhere you turn there is a woman with curly hair. And more often than not, they’re not natural. The audacity!

You’ve got it; that is the jheri curl in hiding. I know what you’re thinking, But those curls are so loose and bouncy! The ringlets make your finger twitch with the desire to tangle your hand in them. And you’re right. The jheri curl as relaxed with age, letting go of it’s dependency on activator spray and moisturizing cream to go with a more ‘natural’ look. That doesn’t mean you don’t stumble across a rebellious head.

     That’s right; they’re still out there. As you can see, there are some jheri curls that just won’t let go of what once was. They’re more resilient and stubborn than that stain on the carpet that you can’t get rid of.

     I’m sorry to break the news to you but it’s like a band-aid; just pull it off quick. These criminals are everywhere! So beware, reader, of the history that can’t stay in the past – it’s itching for the chance to come back ’round.
